The TBA and health worker explains that because of the ongoing draught people move a lot to find food for their animals so its very difficult to find and engage with them on a regular basis. The pastoralist way of living is an ongoing problem for AISDA and the distances they have to travel are huge, mostly by foot. The Afars practise an old tradition of Female Genital Mutilation where the baby girls has her clitoris and labia cut away and her vagina sewn up. The day before her wedding day the girl is un-stiched ready for marriage. Its a brutal and barbaric tradition which AISDA is challenging with great effect, now more than a hundred girls in Dowe district have been saved from the knife and AISDA is now rolling out the scheme in Delafagi. Delafagi is where the oldest ever human remains have been found, the found is thought to be 4.5 mill years old.

  • Hundreds of people gathered at a peaceful vigil for Sarah Everard on Clapham Common in South London on the 13th of March 2021, London, United Kingdom. Sarah Everard went missing on 3 March after setting off at 9pm from a friend’s house to make her two-and-a-half-mile journey home and was days later found murdered. People had turned out to pay respect and love and mourn Sarah Everard as well as all the women and girls who on a daily basis are hurt by men. It was an event full of sadness and reflection and anger but peaceful. The vigil was not sanctioned by police because of Covid restrictions and the police decided to arrest a number of people in an attempt to break up the peaceful and highly emotional vigil. The event took place around the band stand on the common and speeches were held from the stand till police confiscated the sound equipment. The police have since been highly criticized for their handling of the event.

  • Wilson's wedding day....Women gathered around the fire in Wilson's house. It is Wilson's wedding party and his village and home is full of visitors. The Maasais houses have very few and little windows with no glass and the only light is from a fire. The fire makes the room hot and smokey and is the focus point of much talk and laughter...It is mainly Maasais who live in the Loita Hills up above the Serengeti plains. They live in small villages and communities called bomas and live mainly of raising and selling live stock such as cattle and goats. Its a very remote region in Kenya, hard to get to without a four wheel drive with very little infrastructure and up till 2010 no mobile phone network. The Maasais are well known though out Kenya and the world for their colorful clothing and their way of keeping their old traditions alive.
