Sheila Menon, 44, from London, is a filmmaker and environmental campaigner. She has been working on a range of climate-related issues for the last 5 years, both on a local and global level. She volunteers for a variety of environmental and social justice campaign groups, both at NGO and grassroots level. She has a BSc degree in Maths & Business Management from Kings College London.

Sheila Menon is one of the Heathrow 13 and faces a prison sentence for staging a peaceful protest at Heathrow airport in 2015.
This is one image of thirteen from the series The Plane Stupid Heathrow 13.

The 13 climate activists from the group Plane Stupid staged a peaceful protest at Heathrow Airport in June 2015. The protest was against a proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport and aviation in general which the 13 activists see as a direct contribution to climate change. The Heathrow 13 cut through the perimeter fences at Heathrow airport and stopped air traffic for six hours by locking themselves together on one of the runways. They were all subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated trespass and being beside an airdrome without permission and were all found guilty as charged at Willesden Magistrate's Court in January 2016. At the time when found guilty the judge announced they would face prison when sentenced.

These portraits were done in the time between conviction and subsequent sentencing at a time when they all faced a real possibility of going to jail for up to 6 months for their actions. On Feb 24th however all 13 walked out of court with a 6 weeks prison sentence suspended for 12 months and 120 hour community service on average as punishment.

 • Jessica, 16. (Not her real name). She likes being at the Laura Vicuna home for the protection it gives and for teaching her rights. The sisters and counselors have helped her get back her trust and confidence in herself and others. In her spare time she loves to read inspiring stories and she wants to become a social worker in order to express and share her own experiences with other children and what she has learned in spite of what happened to her. .."The rose on the mask symbolises my life; even though I have been through a lot of bad experiences I have managed to overcome them with the help of Laura Vicuna. The lips are red to signify that I say so many things even though not the things I really want to say. The blue signifies the negative thoughts I have in life but the sun signify the hope which came to my life." Jessica is an unwanted child. She has never seen her father who is her grandmother's cousin. The hospital referred her to the Laura Vicuna Center after having tried to take her own life and was in coma for 3 days. She had been abused for many years by relatives. She wanted to run away so many times but she was afraid to leave her little step brother and suicide seemed at that time to be her only way out. One of her biggest worries now is the well-being of her step brother and she finds it very difficult to come to terms with the fact that she had to leave him.

Their school is a good school with lots of social life and activities. Every year Year 5 put on a musical for the whole school and parents - this year the musical was based on the story of Robin Hood.

However, this year the performances were abruptly cut short when Statsminister Mette Frederiksen called for a lock-down of the country including the closure of all schools, and a ban on all larger gatherings because of the spreading Corona Virus. All of a sudden all the kids were asked to stay at home, in isolation, and the school was left lying empty and silent.

The kids have had to make sense out of this and create a daily life of their own, away from their friends. For weeks all teaching and homework has been done online, in living rooms, in kitchens or alone in their rooms. Every so often the kids of 5.C have met online with each other and their teachers but physically most of them haven’t met for almost 4 weeks.

The schools have now partly opened and the children of 5.C are now back in school. Rigorous hand washing is required and so is social distancing. Every class is divided into two class rooms to create enough distance and only one or two teachers can teach the class.

 • School children enjoy their first day back in school after 4 weeks of corona lock-down, April 17th 2020, Denmark. All schools and much of Denmark including it's borders were shut Monday March 16th by the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to prevent the corona virus from spreading beyond control. All school children had to stay at home if possible during the lock-down and many had not seen their friends through-out the 4 weeks it lasted. All teaching was done at home and via online services such as Google Meet and to many time was difficult to pass. Only year 0-5 are now allowed back in school and only under special measures. Classes are split in twos and across two rooms, everyone must wash hands rigorously when they leave and enter the class and the children must observe distance when possible. The children are put together in groups of no more than three and they are the only ones they get to work and play with. Break time has to be in designated areas only and only with class mates.
