  • It is laundry day in the center. All the girls are responsible for washing their own clothes and the wash house is busy. Manila, Philippines. There is very little work in the slums and many women do not have any vocational training so being able to set up a small shop in the streets providing pedicure is a great help to many women.   • Jessica, 16. (Not her real name)..When Jessica came to the home at the age of 12 she was in a coma for 4 days after having tried to take her own life. She had been sexually abused for many years and her grandfather was her father who then carried on abusing her. She had wanted to run away for years but she was afraid to leave her little brother and suicide seemed at the time to be her only way out. Her biggest worry now is the well-being of her brother and she finds it very difficult to come to terms with that she had to leave him. She now lives in The Laura Vicuña Centre in Cubao which houses 30 street girls who may be orphaned, neglected, abandoned, battered, morally endangered and sexually abused. The sisters and counsellors have helped her get back her trust and confidence in herself and others. In her spare time she loves to read inspiring stories and she wants to become a social worker in order to express and share her own experiences with other children and what she has learned in spite of what happened to her. .."The rose on the mask symbolises my life; even though I have been through a lot of bad experiences I has managed to overcome them with the help of Laura Vicuna. The lips are red to signify that I say so many things even though not the things I really want to say.   • Shanon, 16. (Not her real name).She is happy to be in the home for the protection it gives and for the hope it has brought back to her. She loves reading and to dance, listening to music and play the guitar. She has choreographed many of the dance performances the girls do in the home to great applause by the audience. She wants to be  Video Jockey(VJ) to help the other children in the home. She wants to work in TV as a place to highlight the issues and lives the children go through..."The curly gold on the left side of the mask signifies all the positive things which have happened in my life. The mixed colours  all the confusion and problems which are happening in my life which at the moment are overpowering my life. She loves reading fairy tales and wants to become a doctor to help others in need. When she was making the mask she was thinking of herself and how she was feeling...Arianna lived for 10 years with her sister Anne and father in the streets in Bacood district of Manila. The two sisters lived in a small cart and their father slept on the floor underneath. He had left his wife and was taking of the kids by collecting and selling junk, - plastic, metal and wood. The girls did not start school till Anne was 8 and they had to share flip-flops and books, going to school in turn. The girls were taken in by the Laura Vicuna sisters after a teacher raised concerns about the girls being abused in the streets.
